Insomnia affects approximately 70 million people in the United States alone. It is the number two reason people use cannabis – and for good reason! But is it just the high or could it be the cannabidiol (CBD) in the cannabis that is making them sleep? In this article I will be discussing what Insomnia is and determining if CBD is effective for insomnia.
What is Insomnia?
Insomnia is a sleep disorder that causes a person to have a difficult, if not impossible time falling asleep, regardless of how tired a person is, as well as trouble staying asleep. This can cause a plethora of issues, including attention issues, irritability, stress from worrying about sleep, and more! There are many medications out there for insomnia, such as Trazodone or Ambien. However, these pharmaceutical drugs have some scary potential side effects, the following to name a few:
- Unusual Thoughts or Delusions
- Memory Problems
- Suicidal Tendencies
Scary, isn’t it!? No wonder people are looking into alternative, safe, natural solutions to cure their insomnia!
What Contributes to Insomnia?
A lot of things can contribute to insomnia – anxiety, stress, over-stimulation (with lights, etc.), mental health disorders, drug/substances (including nicotine and caffeine), pain, and more. A lot of the times, people who suffer from insomnia can completely eliminate all external factors and still not be able to sleep peacefully through the night or often at all.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol, more commonly known as CBD, is in the cannabinoid family, and comes from the cannabis plant. Most often, CBD products are made from the cannabis ruderalis plant, otherwise known as industrial hemp, as this makes the CBD products legal in all 50 states across the United States. CBD comes in many forms – oils, tinctures, edibles, vape juice for electronic cigarettes, isolate, and concentrate form. Most people with insomnia that I’ve met stick with the tinctures, as they’re easy to dose, affordable, and effective.
CBD for Insomnia
CBD is excellent for insomnia as it is relaxing, an anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), anti-pain and inflammation, and it just straight-up helps you sleep! In smaller doses, it gently wakes the user up, while in higher doses, it puts you to sleep. I personally have found CBD to be extremely effective in curing my insomnia; it used to be so bad I’d stay up for 36-48+ hours before being able to fall asleep and sleep through the night. Now, I fall asleep and sleep through the night almost every single night! Needless to say, CBD has been a life-saver for my insomnia.
